What Features Should Be Marked as Essential Now vs Needed Later?

For a feature list, mark as Essential Now anything the product cannot function without, and move everything else to Needed Later. A practical rule is: if removing the feature breaks the core user flow or the product’s main promise, it belongs in the first release.

Essential Now

• Core actions that deliver the product’s main value
• Non-negotiable features needed for the product to work at all
• Items that validate the riskiest assumption behind the product
• Features with high user impact and low implementation effort, if they are part of the core flow

Needed Later

• Nice-to-have enhancements that improve convenience but are not required for the main job
• Extra polish, advanced options, and differentiating features
• Items that do not directly support the product’s core promise
• Features that are useful, but can safely wait until after launch or the next release

Simple test

Ask: Can the product still solve the user’s main problem without this feature? If the answer is no, it is essential now; if yes, it is needed later.

If useful, a feature list can be sorted with Must-have / Should-have / Could-have / Won’t-have labels to make the decision clearer.
